I hope everyone had a terrific and thankful Thanksgiving! If you can believe it, there are only 20 more school days until Christmas break. Then, when we return a new year will be upon us. However, before we get too excited, there is still work to be done. This week, students will revise and complete their Explanatory Essays. After, the focus will shift to argumentative texts. The focus standard is: ELAGSE7W1: Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. THE FINAL COPY OF THE EXPLANATORY ESSAYS ARE DUE THURSDAY! Students will learn about claims and how authors maintain positions. Additionally, students will be taking the Q2 Mini Touchstone on Friday. Homework: Read 30 minutes Handouts on literary standards due Thursday. Have a great week!!! Greetings Students and Families! Can you believe Thanksgiving break is almost upon us? However, before we break, the students must complete their Explanatory Essays. Last week, the students focused on constructing thesis statements, writing hooks(attention grabbers) and researching text evidence to support their topic/claim. This week, the students will develop their rough drafts and peer edit, before typing on Thursday and Friday. Students will only be required to read 30 minutes for homework, this week; however, they will have a short writing assignment over the break. Have a wonderful and relaxing break! Hope you had a wonderful start to your week! Today, students reviewed text structures as outlined in standard RI5. Text structures reviewed include: Cause and Effect Problem/Solution Compare & Contrast Description Chronological Order Sequence Tomorrow, students will take the first Mini Touchstone for Q2. It will cover our priority standards: RI 4 -6. Wednesday - Friday, we will begin constructing our Explanatory Essay. Students will construct their thesis statement, hooks and introductory paragraphs. The due for typed, published copy will be Friday, November 16, 2018. This week's homework: Read for 30 minutes and complete reading log. Article of the week. Paragraph of the week. We have started Unit 2 and our writing focus is explanatory.
Students will continue to read and respond to texts using the constructed or extended response format. This week, students are evaluating the question: Do We Use Our Phones Too Much? They will be reading paired texts(more than one text) on this topic and will be assessed, using a selected response or multiple choice format, on Friday. We have started Quarter 2. As such, our instructional focus will change. This quarter, we will be addressing the following standards: ELAGSE7RI4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone. ELAGSE7RI5: Analyze the structure an author uses to organize a text, including how the major sections contribute to the whole and to the development of the ideas ELAGSE7RI6: Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how the author distinguishes his or her position from that of others. To demonstrate our commitment to independent reading, the class was assigned a book project. This week, the students have been making presentations. I have been so pleased with the quality content and creative interpretation of their chosen books. Students, keep reading and adding to your book tree. Can you believe it is already October? The season is changing and the year is moving rapidly; likewise, so are we. The students will begin learning a new set of standards: ELAGSE7RL4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of rhymes and other repetitions of sounds (e.g., alliteration) on a specific verse or stanza of a poem or section of a story or drama. ELAGSE7RI4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone. ELAGSE7RL5: Analyze how a drama’s or poem’s form or structure (e.g., soliloquy, sonnet) contributes to its meaning. ELAGSE7RI5: Analyze the structure an author uses to organize a text, including how the major sections contribute to the whole and to the development of the ideas ELAGSE7RL6: Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters or narrators in a text. ELAGSE7RI6: Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how the author distinguishes his or her position from that of others. The students took a pre-test today to determine how much they know or could recall from prior grades. Tomorrow and Wednesday, students will participate in extension activities that allow them to practice skills that need more attention or acceleration on prior standards. This week, 7th grade students will be taking the Cogat/IOWA test. Students will be testing on 9/12-9-14 as well as 9/17-/9-18. We are finishing our unit on Narrative Writing and will begin exploring the Informational Writing genre using several articles, anchor and mentor texts. Students have a restful week and good luck during testing! Hello all!
